Minister of Health instructs SERHA to review security arrangements at Spanish Town Hospital PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 16 July 2010 15:27

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer has requested a report into the circumstances which led to a security breach at the Spanish Town Hospital this morning (Friday, July 16, 2010). The report is to be delivered to the Minister within seventy two (72) hours. This comes after the facility was invaded by armed thugs who robbed staff and patients of their valuables.

The Minister has also instructed the Southeast Regional Health Authority (SERHA) to review the present security arrangements at the Spanish Town Hospital and take steps to improve them.

Minister Spencer expressed regret at the incident but said he was happy that no one was physically harmed.  “We will be assessing what we have in terms of security arrangements and looking into ways in which we can improve as well as any additional measures that can be introduced to ensure greater protection.”

The Minister also explained that counseling has been arranged and has started for the staff and patients who were present at the time.  “The Safety of our staff and patients is a priority for us. I want to assure those who use the Spanish Town Hospital that the Ministry will do all it can to address any safety concerns that persons may have,” said Minister Spencer.

Ward 1 of the Hospital was invaded about 6:30 this morning by four armed men – two with guns and two with knives – who robbed staff and patients of cash, jewelry and cellular phones.
