|$17.8 Million Contract Signed for Darliston Centre of Excellence in Primary Health Care|

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson participated in the contract signing ceremony for the development of the Darliston Centre of Excellence in primary care during a ceremony at the health centre yesterday. This forms part of plans to put in place four Centres of Excellence at the primary health care level; one in each Regional Health Authority.
Work on the Centre, being undertaken by Maxwell Construction, is expected to last about four months and comes at a cost of approximately $17.8 million. The scope of work includes the expansion of the building, roof repairs, modification of the cottages, upgrade of existing plumbing and general painting among other things.
Dr. Ferguson said “the Centre will be sufficiently equipped and staffed to make it the first choice of access to health care service for residents in the western section of the island. Evidence shows that through this approach we should have an appreciable reduction in the improper use of our secondary care facilities which in the long run will be more cost effective.”
He added that “Darliston and the other Centres of Excellence will be used as models to improve the surrounding Health Centres as we continue work to provide the best primary health care system we can to our population. Our National Development Strategy Vision 2030 requires it.”
The Minister has already signed two other sets of contracts for the development of Santa Cruz Health Centre in St. Elizabeth and Isaac Barrant in St. Thomas as Centres of Excellence in the Southern and Southeast Regions respectively. Another set of contracts should soon be signed for the development of the Claremont health centre in St. Ann for the North East Region.
“This marks our solid commitment at the Ministry of Health to improve primary health care in Jamaica,” Dr. Ferguson said.
