The Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine is a statutory body reporting to the Ministry of Health. Its legal authority is vested in the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1969 and accompanying Regulations of 1974 & 2005. At present the Council regulates nine (9) groups of highly technical health professionals in their respective field. Together they possess a combined total of over 10 years experience in the health Sector. Its aim is to protect the health of the public. The administrative activities are extended by a Registrar, a Secretary and a Records Clerk.

The strategic direction of the Council is to ensure that the health professionals taking care of persons who are ill are qualified and competent to return such persons to a healthy state. The health professionals regulated are employed in both the public and private sector. The Council maintains working relations with similar regulatory bodies worldwide. The practice of Environmental Health is comprised of evaluating, correcting, controlling and preventing factors in the environment that can affect the health of present and future generations. Approximately 300 officers carry out this job on behalf of the Ministry of Health in Jamaica. Thirty seven percent (37%) of who have a first degree and 27% is qualified to the second-degree level. Two officers have been certified at the PhD level and two PhD are pending.
